The easy way to delete spam comments from Windows Live Spaces blog

Many Windows Live Space users received lots of spam comments recently. The typical spam comment is something like "wow gold watch" etc.... Usually, we have to delete those spam comments manually by going through a few steps: click the spam comment from the recent comments list at space home, then open that blog entry and click edit, then delete the comment at the bottom, then republish the blog entry. It is a tedious work!!!!

Good news, I found a much easier way to delete those spam comments! That is to go through the mobile live space. http://mobile.spaces.live.com From here, login->go to your space->recent comments, you will see that there is a direct ''delete comment'' link for each comment. Yeah!! Although it will not solve the spam comments problem, it is much easier to delete them!

I am at the apple centre, 5th avenue, NYC now. I just played the iPhone!!! It is super cool in deed!!! I tried almost every function and every feature. It is very easy to use, espeially if you are a Mac user. The only little thing I feel difficult is the SMS, the kepad is really small. I always typed the wrong letter. However the error correction is quite good. ;-)

I am sure I will get one when it is launched to the UK!!!

Connecting to the Internet via GPRS: Using bluetooth enabled mobile phone as a modem

This article gives you a step by step instruction on using your mobile phone as a modem to connect your laptop to the Internet via GPRS.

The description is based on Windows Vista. It is similar if you use Windows XP or Windows 2000.

Pair your laptop and your mobile phone:
Turn on bluetooth of both your mobile phone and your laptop. Click the bluetooth icon from you laptop, press the button 'add'. The laptop will search all discoverable devices and display them in a list. Select your mobile phone from the list. Then you may choose a passkey. Enter the passkey from your mobile phone when asked. Now your mobile phone and your laptop are paired.
Configure the mobile phone as a modem for GPRS connection:
In Windows Vista, 'Start'->'Connect to'->'Set up a connection or network'->'Connect to the Internet'->'Dial up'. Enter telephone number *99#. Username and password are depending on you Network. For UK network providers, please see the settings: http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html. I am an Orange customer, so the username is user, password is pass.
Important: set up "Extra initialization commands":
Go to 'control panel', switch to 'classic view'. select 'phone and modem options'. Please note, in this screen, you must input an area code, otherwise the next screen won't appear! In the next screen, select the modem, click 'properties', then click the 'advanced' tap. At the 'Extra initialization commands', enter +CGDCONT =1,"IP","apn.address", where 'apn.address' is the name of the GPRS APN that you wish to connect to. See the settings of different UK providers here: http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html#apn. I am an Orange customer, so I will enter +CGDCONT =1,"IP","orangeinternet". Click ok then connect!

Windows Live OnceCare will block VPN ports

If you tried VPN connection at Windows XP or Windows Vista, but failed with no reason given, that probably because of the FireWall settings. If you use Windows Live OnceCare, that might be the cause of the problem. Open OneCare, click "Change OneCare Settings", click "FireWall", click "Advanced Settings",click "Ports and Protocols", tick the box "Virtual Private Network (IPsec of PPTP)". Done. The problem should be solved!

If the VPN connection still failed, try to look at other FireWall or anti-virus application. Usually Lower down the FireWall level or disable it would do, but be careful.

How to transfer mii from wii to pc

Playing wii? Love your mii? Wanna use mii as your personalisd logo or for whatever? Follow the easy steps to transfer mii from wii to pc.

1．Transfer mii to wiimote
Go to wii menu, select 'mii', then select 'transfer mii', choose 'wiimote'. You will see a number of slots. Press both A+B on willmote, drag the mii you want to transfer, drop the mii in one of the slots, remember the slot number.

2．Connect wiimote and pc (bluetooth)
Wiimote is actually a bluetooth device. Press 1+2 on wiimote ( or press the red synchronize button inside wiimote), the four blue light on wiimote will keep flashing which means the wiimote is discoverable. Enable bluetooth from your pc, select new connection, you will see the wiimote icon 'Nintendo RVL-CNT-01'. As shown in figure 1.

3．Transfer mii to pc
I used MiiMega-MallV2.0. Select 'transfer from wiimote', then select the slot number in which you put your mii, then click 'transfer to pc'. see figure 2. You will find a .MII file in the 'upload' folder. This is your mii, the size is about 1k.

4．Use .MII file to retrieve the picture
I used mii editor, beta version. see figure 3. Select 'file', then load the .MII file you just transfered. You might find the picture is slightly diffenent from you real mii, you may use mii editor to edit it again. Finally, select 'file', then 'export', choose the size of your exported picture. Done! See figure 4, it's mii.

For mac users, the first two steps and the last step are same. You just need a Mac version software to transfer mii in step 3. Having FUN with wii!!!

Just follow the easy steps:

1. Prepare ingredients: milk, icecream, kit kat, dried seeds. Of course milk is the most important ingredient, for others you may add whatever you like to make your favorite flavor. For example you may add fruit, chocolate bar, butter, muffin, nuts, etc.

2. Put all ingredients in the blender.

3. Blend using low speed for a minute then high speed for a minute. (It may need longer time if you add dried nuts, seeds etc.)

4. Blend it until it looks nice and smooth. Then done and enjoy!

Web Environmental Protection

Environmental protection is definitely one of the hottest topics in the world. We may change our habit in our daily life to help. For example, use energy-saving bulb; minimize the use of plastic bags; recycle of wastes; do less driving; etc. Google is a pioneer in environmental protection who recently has installed solar energy systems. Ok, we all know about it. What I am going to talk about now is the Web environmental protection.

I am not sure whether the concept of 'Web environmental protection' has been discussed by others or not. My point about 'Web environmental protection' refers to the resources, I mean we should try to reduce the duplication of resources. The most typical example is the same article (same content) that had been published on countless websites. It is a big waste of the resources. Especially nowadays with the forums and blogs getting more and more popular, people can easily copy & paste to re-produce a same content article.

Think about it, although an article may only use a few kilobytes space on the web, what about a picture? a video? what about billions of people doing the same thing everyday? The duplication of content occupies a large amount of web resources. This is somehow a tremendous waste. This duplication also increases the unnecessary work of search engine and reduces the quality of search results.

So, if you want to recommend an article, a photo or a video, why not just give a link? This will not only respect the original author but also occupy less space on the web. If you really like it, you may also digg it. Let's do less 'copy & paste' and make good use of web resources. Everyone can do it, starting from trivial things, from your own blogs.

Of course people have a lot of reasons to disagree with my opinion. For example, the access issue, the integration issues, the media issues, the finance issues and so on. I totally understand. Here, I just want to say, let's try our best to protect the web environment.

Top reasons for using LiveSpace

It sounds a bit ridiculous that I publish this article at Blogger. Well, before read this article you need to understand my special situation. 1. my native language is Chinese 2. my great social network is in China 3. I am not in China.

There are many blog service providers，such as LiveSpace, MySpace, Blogger, Yahoo360... recently some Chinese local blog service provider are getting popular, e.g. sina, sohu, wretch... you may also host yourown blog using tools such as WordPress. Which is your favorite? Or you are a geek who has an account at each providr? I am still using LiveSpace as my main Blog, here is just an English version. Comparing with other Blog services, LiveSpace is not flexible, not powerful, not open, not really easy to use. But, I am still using it and will be using it. Here I state my top reasons:

In LiveSpace you may setup permission. No matter your blog is public or private, it's easy to setup.
To attract more readers, you should choose a famous service provider. LiveSpace is a good choice. Thanks the huge marketing of msn messenger.
Almost all of my friends are using live messenger. Only few friends working in IT use gtalk,skype,yahoo,icq,aol,iChat etc. Many Chinese use qq however I do not use it.
Not everyone knows the best way to read blogs. Do not expect everyone knows RSS. The advantage of LiveSpace is that it will indicate update to your contact on messenger.
Of course the indicator is only for those who use windows version of messenger. But Linux and Mac users know and use RSS. This is not an issue.
The powerful GFWChina alway block good websites, even Blogger. So this blog is not accessible from China. We always need to worry about that someday the blog provider or hosting will be blocked. LiveSpace doesn't have this issue so far.
If I choose a local service, I may not be able to access it, or it becomes very slow.
LiveSpace can auto translate the headings. For my friends who can not read Chinese, this is at least something they can read.
I wrote my first blog entry there. I have been using it for so long. Don't see any good reason to move.
LiveSpace is getting better, now it supports gadget,feeds and embed video. Maybe someday we can even edit the code.
LiveSpace has advantege in search results.

OK. These are reasons, my own reasons. I am not a Microsoft or Windows fan, but I must admit that Microsoft made great contributions to our life.

Wii tennis score over 2000

Africa – people -1

About Africa, there are too many stories and too much to talk about. pz is telling the stories by the time sequence, then I will use my way to talk through.

The first thing to talk about is people. Wherever you go in the world, apart from the beautiful scenery, you always have to have some sort of contact with people. The four years ago Egypt trip had given me an extremely bad impression of African. Perhaps I was too naive or perhaps I had been too unlucky, all the African I met were bad anyway (Except Omar). I don’t want to tell you how bad they were because that will make me recall the bad memory. Let’s talk about East African now.

The overall impression of East Africa people is that they are better than the people from north, sort of honest. This may due to their culture and the type of jobs. With the experience, I know that I will never trust anyone. East Africa is perhaps the world's poorest places. Poor, it’s really poor, but there is a huge gap between the rich and the poor, similar as all developing or third world countries.

Why poor? There must be reasons. They should not always only waiting for the various source of international aid from developed countries, instead they should find the reasons from themselves. That is: lazy!

Lazy is my most prominent impression of East African. During the daytime, you may always find lots of people on streets but do nothing. Some dozing, some playing cards or chess, some chatting, and some simply sitting in a trance. They are expressionless, they look like without a soul, I couldn’t read anything from their eyes. This kind of people can be seen anywhere, even if they are doing something, they look like robots.

One day on a boat, I saw the fisherman was fishing with a very simple and ridiculous way, no wonder he didn’t get any fish. Whenever I saw him, I saw his eyes were straight towards somewhere, dull and expressionless. I don’t know what he was thinking. Apparently, nothing. The only moment I saw something from his eye and his face is when he laughing at other people who were on board opposite but not covered for the sudden heavy rain.

Another day we were at an agent in Zanzibar to book a tour. There were two persons inside when we came in, one was in a phone call, and another person did nothing. When we were served we were asked to wait for a few minutes to wait a guide coming to take us on board. Just in these few minutes, those two were simply looking at the ground, do nothing. I really admire their stay ability! The guide still hadn’t arrived after a quite long time, I couldn’t stand in those silly situation and tried to talk with them. I was shocked to discover that they seemed to have forgotten what we were waiting for! That are the cases. Everybody seemed dull and no soul.

Another expression of East Africa is the really slow pace. They do anything slowly, extremely slow which you can not believe. Many people walking like an 80 years old guy, writing step by step like a child, you can not tolerate their slow working pace. If you were waiting to buy tickets, to send mail, to check-in etc (everything), you must be very patient. It is not because of the work is complicated, it’s just because of the slow working pace. How slow, how lazy, how poor they are.

Although the country is poor, it seems most people are still satisfied with their life. There is far from the pressure and tension in modern cities, people seem to enjoy this kind of lazy life.

The end of Christmas-new year holiday

The long Christmas and new year holiday has finally come to an end. Now I am busy at work again. I still haven't got used to it, the feeling is much like a child going back to school after a long summer off.

This holiday is memorable. I visited Africa again, in Tanzania and Kenya at East Africa. Four years ago, I had a trip alone to Egypt - my dream place from childhood. I went there alone without any preparation - such a brave trip! However, the difference between reality and dream is huge. I have to say that it was a horrible trip. I got a taste of the darkness in Africa which I will never forget. So, I was so brave when I decided to go to Africa again. ;-). With previous experience, this time I had a very good preparattion which made this trip fantastic. Place visited: Dar es salaam, Zanzibar, Arusha, Moshi, Nairobi. Safari to the famous Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara National Park. I saw almost all sorts of wild animals. I also climbed mountain Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa (unfortunately, due to lack of time I could not reach the peak, maybe next year). I also had a barbecue meal at the Carnivore Restaurant which is one of the world's top 50 restaurants. Emm... Many many... give me some time, I will let you know my stories.

IE clean up

Some useful tips I used to clean up Internet Explorer.

Some programs install unwanted commands on IE's right-click menu, even if you remove the program the menu still exists. To clean it, Launch REGEDIT (click start->run->type regedit) and navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt, then delete the unwanted commands.

Some internet providers install branded title and logo to IE. To restore the original IE logo, Launch REGEDIT and navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar, delete the BrandBitmap and SmBrandBitmap string values. To restore the original title, just find the current title string and modify it.

Answers from Microsoft, based on IE7. Other older versions of IE may slightly different.

MSN contact request from strangers

I recently received many strangers' requests to add me on their MSN list. It never happened before, and those strangers have similar names. My feeling told me that it's not normal. Having searched on the web, I found out that it's a common problem to many MSN users in this year. The reason is because some websites use triggers to send out huge amount of requests to MSN users, it can bypass certain protocols. Once you add the person to your MSN contact, it will either send you some advertisement, or send you virus. Somthing seriousely, it may get your private files or passwords. MSN has awared about it and built up a black name list. It's a long long list... Anyway, to be safe, never add strangers to your contact list!

Just discovered that MSN space has introduced many new modules, including weather, RSS feed, friend list, as well as power toy etc. Those modules may have already been there for a while, but I just noticed it. ;-) What I like the most is the RSS feed, you may feed any your favorite blogs there, as long as feed is provided. I have added feed of this blog to my MSN space. This feature is particularly useful if you keep your MSN space as private and also want to have something to be public. Like me. ;-) So, your friends can view all of them at just one place. Cool.

Shopping at Royalmail online shop

Ok, just a little experience to tell everyone about the royal mail online shop. If the billing name/address and delivery name/address are different, must be careful when you fill in the form. And must have a careful final check of the name before submission. I met a problem because the system was so clever to mix the two names. When you click submission, nothing can be changed, you will be offered an order number. When you find the problem and call the customer service, they only ask a reference number which you can not find it at all.

Quick building a photo album on web using Picasa

I recently saw a friend's website of photo sharing. Surprised, it is made by Picasa. I didn't know Picasa can do this. ;-) I then had a try, wooooo... it's really easy and cool! You can make a cool photo album on your web in a minute. What you need to do is just open Picasa, add the photos you want to publish, highlight them, right click and select 'make a webpage'. Then you may select a template, the quality of photos etc... then Done!

HTK 3.3 quick start guide

HTK is a bit difficult to use for beginners. Here I write a summary of the essential tools and steps to quickly build a recogniser. It is based on HTK 3.3 on building a simple acoustic environment recogniser.

Steps:
1. Download and install HTK, set 'path' and 'CLASSPATH' in the environment variable setting.
2. Get your audio files ready, seperate them into training and testing folders.
3. If the audio format is appropriate for HTK, this step can be skipped. Otherwise the format needs to be converted to HTK. Make configuration file and script file and run HCopy -T 1 -C lib/config1 -S scripts/script1.scp
4. Feature extraction using MFCCs. Make configuration file and script file and run HCopy -T 1 -C lib/config2 -S scripts/script2.scp
5. HMM model definition. Make configuration file, script file, definition file and prototype file, create a folder hmm0 and run HCompV -T 2 -D -C lib/config3 -o hmmdef -f 0.01 -m -S scripts/train.scp -M hmm0 lib/proto
6. Seed model. Here it is a little bit complex, please refer to the HTK book on how to do it. I write a Java program to generate the models. (HTK book uses a perl script to do the job).
7. Training. Files needed: configration file, label file, script file, model list. Run HERest -D -C lib/config_tr -I labels/labels.mlf -t 250.0 150.0 1000.0 -S scripts/train.scp -H hmm0/macros -H hmm0/models -M hmm1 lib/modellist This should be run at least 3 times to refine the model. You should test the optimised number by experiment. I used to run 6 times. Therefore the folders hmm1-hmm6 are needed.
8. Net files. Create a grammar file and run HParse gram snet
9. Testing. Make script file and run HVite -D -H hmm6/macros -H hmm6/models -S scripts/test.scp -C lib/config_tr -w lib/snet -i rep.mlf -p -20.0 -s 0.0 lib/dict lib/modellist
10. Result. Make label file and run HResults -I labels/testlabels.mlf lib/modellist rep.mlf

Clean installation of Windows XP Pro SP2 on Sony Vaio FE

I have installed a fresh Windows XP Pro SP2 on my Sony Vaio VGN-FE28CP laptop. I've met some problems and finally fixed them. I hope the following hints are useful if you meet the same problems.

After installing Windows XP pro SP2 and all necessary drivers, there are two major problems.
1. Audio and Modem problems. It won't allow you to install the audio driver and the modem driver. Solution: install hotfix kb835221 (or kb888111) first, then install the audio deiver.
2. The system won't shutdown. This problem is caused by the build-in camera (motion eye). Solution: install hotfix kb909667.
